Interesting concept… I agree with the idea of writing in those bits of time, before bed. Sometimes you just have to push yourself. But I don’t know.. I think if I made myself hate writing, 1) I wouldn’t write at all. I don’t do things I hate, because what’s the point of that? And 2) that goes against all of my reasons for writing. I write to create. I write to have fun, and explore my characters. I write to have my ideas and emotions out onto the page, and have other people read, and hear from them. If I write something I hate, it impacts the quality of that piece of work. On the contrary, I can tell instantly what chapters I loved to write. Those chapters have flail, action, emotion. And my readers love those chapters too!

All I’m saying is, I don’t really think you should hate your writing. Maybe it’s not the funnest process, sure. And yeah, don’t wait for inspiration to strike all the time.

But if you instead fall in love with writing and creation, loving your characters and the idea that soon, you can edit or print your book out or publish! You can really enjoy the process, and put that joy into your work.

Hey, Z!! Thanks for the comment! I need to get back to you on this one. I think I should have clarified the post with "parts of writing you can love" or something 🤣 I'll try a longer response when I have time! Thank you again!!! 😊

Okay---I'm back to address this.

Well, here's where I think you're a bit confused about what I was saying. I never, in the post, said anything about the emotional half of writing. I didn't say you need to not have fun, not explore characters, not have emotion out on the page. I didn't say that. I said you need to do it when it's hard and when you don't feel like it---which you said you agree with. I'm not really sure where you got the impression I was saying you can't love writing and creation, because my post was about the hard work part of writing that is tough and free to be hated.

Let me use a metaphor. You're saying that I should love having tomatoes, watermelon, and all sorts of foods coming from my garden. I say yes and amen! Having a garden is wonderful. But you read my post and interpreted it so that I was saying you should hate the garden produce you get. Far from it, I was saying that you can hate tilling up the garden, weeding for days on end, and getting sunburns so bad that your skin peels off---that's what I was saying. We both agree that the end result of the garden is good. We both agree that hard work is necessary. We both agree totally.

I'd love to talk more if you think I'm confused about what you were saying.

I wish that would work for me, but most times, if I don't feel like writing, my brain runs out of words. I stare at the blank page for ten solid minutes without thinking of a single complete thought. But I've never been great at writing stories anyway, songs and poetry are more my speed. I applaud you for the ability to power through!

"Become a writer who hates writing." Interesting mindset 🤔

Thanks for the very helpful post Noah! :) I fairly recently decided to stop "only writing when I feel like it", and since then I have made way more progress on my novel :)
