Let’s face it together; the writing of most beginning writers isn’t good.
Seeing that, folks tend to bombard these aspiring writers with ways to improve both plot and prose. But the truth is writing will eventually solve its own issues. If you keep writing for very long, you’ll be able to see what you’re now doing wrong. You don’t need to read articles about character arcs to fix your character. You just need to write more.
Or maybe do read the article, but the single most important thing is that you write—and you write and you write. That’s why I am giving you permission to:
Tell, don’t show.
Mimic your favorite books in an unashamed way.
Write as many trope stories as you like.
Overuse the word said.
Don’t ask for feedback. (If you’re keeping track, you can tell that you’re supposed to just keep practicing instead.)
Let what you wrote last year boost you higher this year. Don’t hold onto it.
Murder the writer that you were last week and write something new.
Stop obsessing.
Stop trying to be better.
Just start flowing from one story to another. If the writer inside of you wants to slow you down, it’s time to get a new writer.
amazing advice!!
The best thing that's ever happened to my writing was that I kept writing. Second best was that I read like a maniac 😂
A public school teacher had her students write "Said" on a piece of paper and burn it, chanting over and over again "said is dead"! Said is very much NOT dead. XD Great advice, Noah!
